Dear Editor,
Empower Foundation is a Thai organization promoting opportunities for women sex worker’s in Thailand. We would like to invite the press to join the launch of our ground breaking exhibition created by sex workers, expressing the lived experience of anti-trafficking measures in Thailand.
BANGKOK EVENT Featuring
• An overview of “Trafficking and the Sex Industry” by the Director of Empower, Chantawipa Apisuk
• The premier screening of Empower film “สาวน้อยผจญภัย - Last Rescue in Siam” This is the first film ever made by sex workers in Thailand. It is a short black and white film made in the tradition of the old silent movies. It invites the audience to see the ridiculous side of the laws enforced on sex workers.
• First public display of the “Mida Tapestry”. This large embroidered artwork was sewn by migrant sex workers as a way to document and show the impact police raids have on their lives. It carries a second message in that sex workers are regularly forced or offered sewing lessons as a cure-all for social ills. The “Mida Tapestry” leaves everyone in no doubt that sex workers are already talented needlewomen!
• “HIT & RUN - Sex worker Research on Trafficking in Thailand” Another first, this document combines the results of 12 months research done by over 200 sex workers on the human rights impact of anti trafficking law across Thailand.
“We have now reached a point in history where there are more women in the Thai sex industry being abused by anti-trafficking practices than there are women being exploited by traffickers” Hit & Run
CHIANG MAI EVENT: Showing of Last Rescue in SIAM, and MIDA TAPESTRY with HIT &RUN report available. We anticipate our audience will include representatives from Thai and international NGO’s, and other members of civil society. There will be ample time to explore the displays, and talk with sex workers many of whom were part of the project and also those who starred in the film.
. Sincerely Yours,
Chantawipa Apisuk
