Hi,

The controversial Myanmar-China Myitsone Hydroelectric Project on the Irrawaddy River is moving forward. Despite violent protests by environmental groups and ethnic minorities, Myanmar's Electric Power Minister Zaw Min announced last week that the project, which if completed would be the 15th largest hydroelectric power station in the world, would not be stopped.

Tell Minister Zaw Min that progress at the expense of irreplaceable ecological resources is not progress at all.»

The Irrawaddy River is Myanmar's most significant geological feature and main waterway, supporting the nation's rice paddies and in turn, millions of individual families. The proposed project site lies directly on top of a major fault line and over 12,000 people have already been displaced. No detailed environmental or risk assessment has been conducted except for a brief 2009 assessment by China's CPI Corporation that was leaked this year, which warned of "serious social and environmental problems" along the river and advised a site re-location.

Demand Myanmar protect not only its precious ecological resources but the lives and livelihoods of its citizens.»

Thanks for taking action!
